The next season of Only Murders in the Building will not spend most of its time in the building at all. Hulu is sending Charles, Oliver, and Mabel to London, where the death of rival podcaster Cinda Canning becomes the trio’s hardest and most self-aware case yet.
Season 6 premieres December 8, 2026, and Hulu is packaging the London chapter under the title Only Murders in London. Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez return, while the guest cast includes Olivia Colman, David Tennant, Nicola Coughlan, Martin Freeman, and Meryl Streep. The location change is not a vacation episode: Hulu's official synopsis says Cinda summons the trio across the Atlantic to catch her killer.
That answer clears up the two questions driving the late-August search spike: the show is returning this year, and the London move is real. It also creates a useful distinction between what Hulu has confirmed and what viewers are still guessing about the mystery.
The title change tells viewers what kind of season this is
Hulu’s press page still files the series under Only Murders in the Building, but the new campaign uses Only Murders in London. That is a playful title rather than evidence that the original series has been canceled or permanently renamed. The central trio, their podcasting dynamic, and the Cinda case all carry forward from the New York story.
The wording signals a deliberate break from the Arconia’s corridors. Previous seasons expanded beyond the apartment building, yet the structure always pulled the investigation back toward the residents and history of that one address. Season 6 instead makes London the scene of the crime, the source of suspects, and the home of the genre tradition the show is teasing.
Hulu calls it the home of the cozy murder mystery and promises “English-eccentric” characters. That description suggests the joke will not be simply Americans ordering tea badly. The series can put its amateur sleuths inside the conventions their podcast has always borrowed: country-house suspects, theatrical alibis, class signals, and the performance of politeness around a violent secret.
Cinda Canning is victim, messenger, and podcast mirror
Season 5 ended with Cinda Canning dead outside the Arconia after drawing attention to a London mystery. Hulu’s synopsis sharpens the setup: she summons Charles, Oliver, and Mabel to London to catch her killer. The language leaves room for the mechanism to be a recording, scheduled message, or material she assembled before her death; it does not establish that Cinda somehow survived.
Cinda is unusually important because she is not just another body. Tina Fey’s character built a successful true-crime operation that has repeatedly reflected the trio’s ambitions back at them. Her work raised uncomfortable questions about turning pain into narrative, choosing the most marketable suspect, and treating an investigation as content.
Making that podcaster the victim forces the trio to examine the machinery they share with her. A clue can be evidence and an episode hook at the same time. A grieving source can also be a potential character in a popular show. The London case therefore has a natural route to the ethical tension that made the earliest seasons more than a celebrity whodunit.
There is still a spoiler boundary. Hulu has confirmed the victim and the trip, but it has not published the killer, motive, or full route by which the trio is drawn overseas. Cast announcements identify performers, not guilt. Any list that turns the guest lineup into a suspect ranking is speculation.
The guest cast is built for misdirection
The official cast list pairs the three leads with an unusually deep group of British and Irish performers. Olivia Colman, David Tennant, Nicola Coughlan, and Martin Freeman can each play charm and suspicion without changing tone. Da’Vine Joy Randolph returns as Detective Williams, Michael Cyril Creighton returns as Howard, and Meryl Streep continues as Loretta.
That mix matters more than star power. A mystery comedy needs performers who can make an implausible person seem briefly guilty and a suspicious person seem briefly safe. It also needs characters who can collide with Oliver’s theater instincts, Charles’s actorly vanity, and Mabel’s resistance to being pushed into somebody else’s narrative.
The production has wrapped, according to the show’s late-August announcement. A completed shoot does not guarantee every episode is picture-locked, because editing, music, visual effects, and localization continue after cameras stop. It does make the December 8 date more concrete than an early development target.
Viewers planning a rewatch do not need every prior mystery. The essential bridge is season 5’s finale, which resolves Lester’s case and establishes Cinda’s death. The broader emotional context is the trio’s increasingly public identity as investigators and creators. Our September Netflix guide covers a different streaming slate, while the fall 2026 movie preview is the better map for theatrical releases around the same period.
London changes the rules without erasing New York
Moving a location-dependent comedy is risky. The Arconia is both a set and a social machine: elevators force encounters, the board creates conflict, and residents can become suspects without appearing from nowhere. London cannot reproduce that exact architecture merely by giving the trio a picturesque hotel.
The opportunity is to replace one closed community with another. Cinda’s professional network, a podcast production, a theater company, or an old institution could create the same pressure-cooker effect. Hulu’s synopsis emphasizes a collection of eccentric local characters, which points toward a defined suspect circle rather than a citywide chase.
The title joke also preserves the original. Calling the season Only Murders in London works because audiences know what “the Building” means. New York can remain emotionally present through the characters, Howard and Detective Williams, and the habits the trio carries abroad. A good location change tests those habits; it does not pretend they never existed.
The clearest creative question is whether the trio can solve a case without the home-field shortcuts that usually connect them to witnesses and records. Mabel cannot rely on knowing which neighbor is lying. Oliver cannot assume the social rules of his own theater world. Charles may find that a familiar screen persona carries different meaning overseas.
What happens before December 8
Hulu’s next useful releases will be an episode schedule, fuller character names, and a proper trailer that distinguishes setup from montage. Those materials can confirm whether the season arrives all at once or follows the show’s familiar weekly pattern. The press page currently establishes the season, premise, and cast, but viewers should not infer a release cadence from older seasons until Hulu lists it.
The marketing will also show how strongly the new title is used across Hulu and Disney+ interfaces. Streaming catalogs sometimes retain a parent series name while a campaign promotes a season subtitle. Either presentation leads to the same continuation; there is no announced spinoff that requires a separate subscription or a second continuity.
For now, the dependable conclusion is pleasantly simple. Only Murders returns December 8 with its core cast, a London setting, and a Cinda Canning case designed to turn the show’s podcast satire inward. Everything beyond that—including the killer—is still a mystery worth leaving unsolved.
